BRABU BSc Physics Honors Part-1 Syllabus: Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar Bihar University Under Graduation / BSc Physics Honors 1st Year Syllabus are written in this Article.

BSc Physics Honors will completed in 3 Yeas. Out of which 1st Year Conducted Honors Paper-1 of 75 Marks and Honors Paper-2 (75 Marks) of 150 Marks as well as Practical Paper-1 of 50 Marks also Occur in that Year.

BRABU BSc Physics Honors (Theory) Syllabus:

Honors Paper-I (Theory)

(12 Questions to be set. 6 to be answered, 2 from Group A, and 4 from Group B)

Group-A (Special theory of Relativity)

  1. Galilean Transformation, Inertial frame of reference, Lorentz-Fitz-Gerald (Contraction, Einstein postulates, Lorentz Transformation), & its consequences. Length contraction and time dilation. Addition of velocities, Dragging of light by moving medium, Relativistic Doppler effect for propagation of light waves, Aberration of light, Mass-energy Relation.

Group-B (Mechanics and properties of Matter):

  1. Inertial frame of reference and non-intertial frame, Coriolis and centrifugal forces and their simple applications. Generalised coordinates, Constraints (holonomic & nonholonomic) D’Alembert’s principle and Lagrange’s equations of motion, Hamilton’s equation of motion and their simple of application.
  2. Gravitational potential and field due to bodies of regular geometrical shape, Motion in central field, Kepler’s laws, two particle motion in a central field.
  3. Elasticity and elastic constants, Relation between elastic constants, bending of beams and cantilevers, Torsion of cylinder and rigidity modulus by flat spiral spring. Non flat spiral spring. Effect of temperature and pressure on elasticity.
  4. Surface tenstion and surface energy, Principle of virtual work and its application to surface tension, Ripples and gravity waves, surface tension by the method of ripples.
  5. Effect of temperature and pressure on surface tension.
  6. Perfect fluids, equation of continuity, Euler’s equation for perfect Fluid, Bernoulli’s equation, Helmholtz Kelvin theorem on vorticity.
  7. Viscosity of liquids, critical velocity, Poiseulle’s formula with correction, Flow of a compressible fluid through a narrow tube, Effect of temperature and pressure of viscosity.

Group-C (Waves and Vibration)

  1. Differential equation of a wave, Equation of progressive waves, stationary waves, Compression waves in fluids and in extended solids.
  2. Free damped, forced oscillations in one dimension, Fourier series and its applications to rectangular and saw tooth waves, vibration of string.
  3. Intensity and loudness of sound and their measurements Acoustics of buildings.

Honors Paper-II (Theory)

Ten questions to set, five from group A and five group B, five to be answered, at least two from each group

Group-A (Heat), 4 questions.

  1. Derivation of Maxwell’s law of distribution of velocities and its experimental verification, Equipartition of energy, Mean free path.
  2. Transport phenomena-Viscosity, conduction and diffusion, Brownian motion, Langevin and Einstein’s theories and experimental determination of Avogadro’s number.
  3. Rectilinear flow of heat in a mental rod, conductivity by periodic flow method, Relation of thermal and electrical conductivities, Vender Waals equation of state.

Group-B (Thermodynamics), 8 questions.

  1. Zeroth law of thermodynamics, Definition of temperature, first and second law of thermodynamics, Carnot’s engine and Carnot’s theorem, Absolute scale of temperature, Clausius’s inequality, Entropy changes in reversible and irreversible processes, Enthalpy, Helmholtz and Gibb’s functions, Gibbs-Helmholtz equations. Maxwell’s equations and its application to simple physical problems.
  2. Thermodynamics description of phase transition, Chemical potential, Latent heat of transition. Clapeyron equation, Ehrenfest scheme of phase transition.
  3. Joule-Thompson effect, Liquefaction of gases with special reference to hydrogen and helium, Production and measurement of low temperature.
  4. Black body radiation, Kirchoff’s law, Stefan’s law, Wien’s law, Planck’s law and its experimental verification.
  5. Einstein and Debye theories of specific heat of solids.

BRABU BSc Botany Honors Part-1 (Practical) Syllabus:

The course shall include the following experiments.

  • ‘G’ by Kater’s Pendulum.
  • Young modulus by Flexure of beam.
  • Elastic constants by Searle’s method.
  • Rigidity modulus by

  2. Mexwell’s well’s needle.
  • Moment of inertia by Fly-Wheel.
  • Surface tension by Jaeger’s Method.
  • Surface tension by method of Ripples.
  • Surface tension by soap-bubble.
  • Viscosity of water by capillary flow method.
